Project planning, management, design
t the Winterthur storage site, we are adding on to an existing warehouse with the aim of using only existing components from demolition projects. The planning process is reversed. It begins with the collection of materials and changes constantly as the search for different components progresses. The selection of the component is followed by measuring, inventorying and cataloging: To reinstate a component, we need the most accurate information possible. This is how the design is created in a constant process of deliberation: The structure of Hall 118 is formed by steel beams that once supported the Coop distribution center on the Lysbüchel site in Basel. The four new floors are accessed by a steel exterior staircase from the former Orion office building in Zurich. This is also where the granite façade slabs come from, which we are converting into new walkway coverings on the balcony arbors. Aluminum insulated windows as well as a red facade sheet from Winterthur and Zurich are used as cladding. In addition, we deliberately use natural building materials such as wood, straw and clay. Like the reused building materials, they are processed with minimal energy input and guarantee an excellent indoor climate. This creates space for twelve new think tanks, workrooms and studios. These gather around a communal kitchen on each floor. Each floor is accessible via elevator and external staircase and is equipped with sanitary rooms and spacious balcony arbors. With the K.118, the construction office succeeded in situ in reducing the footprint in construction by 60% compared to a comparable conventional new building. "...so the ultimate goal of true circular architecture would be a process in which no waste is ever produced and therefore no grey energy wasted." Quote from our "Reusing Building Components" book. "The process is characterized by a constant going back - or rather, by continuous circles." Because to get from the linear to the circular, a thorough remeasurement of the upper mind is necessary. A A tour of the K.118 can help. It is a lighthouse project, not for the city marketing of Winterthur, but as a deed proof for green building. Quote from Benedikt Loderer "No one could more clearly refute the suspicion that 'reuse' in architecture necessarily synonymous with 'tinkering'" Quote from Herrmann Czech
