Basel Pavilion

Under the title "City needs open space!", the Forum Dreispitz is addressing the process of transformation of the formerly closed bonded warehouse in the south of Basel into a new urban quarter: The current development is expanding the existing commercial area to include new uses such as culture, education and housing. On the disused track bed at the southern Dreispitz, the temporary Basel Pavilion made of reused building components shows both challenges and potential solutions in the discourse on energy and resource consumption and public open spaces of a city.

The winning design "Loggia Baseliana" was created by isla and was selected by the jury from 182 international entries. With their design, Marta Colón de Carvajal and Juan Palencia convinced the jury: Their "Loggia Baseliana" consists of up to six open units made of different, reusable components. With formal clarity, each unit derives its constructive system from its respective materiality. Grouped together under a simple gable roof made of trapezoidal sheet metal, the modules form a continuous gallery walkway over fifty meters long along the railroad tracks - an urban veranda that offers glimpses of the past and views of the upcoming transformation into an urban quarter.
